A Garden Birthday, A New Home: Grazing Catering for 20 in Malta
There are some bookings that carry more than one reason to celebrate. This one did.
On Saturday 12 September, we catered a garden birthday party at a private home in Malta for around 20 guests. It was a birthday first, but it was also the first time this couple had opened their new house to family and friends. A birthday and a housewarming, in the same garden, on the same evening.
The brief was clear from the first message: relaxed, but a little special. Nothing formal. No sit-down service. Something guests could graze through slowly over a few hours while they moved between the garden, the kitchen and the new terrace they were quietly proud of.
Why grazing catering suits a garden party
A grazing spread works because it lets people be where they want to be. There is no call to the table, no course to wait for, no moment where the host has to stop hosting.
For this party, we built the spread in two halves that worked together.
Things to pick up. The grazing tray was made for one hand and no plate. Tuna bridge rolls, soft and delicately filled. Three-cheese pinwheels, flaky pastry with a rich filling that came out of the oven in layers. Salt cod and pea mint tartlets, a small delicate thing that carries a lot of flavour. And fig, pistachio and honeyed chèvre on wholemeal croûte, the one guests kept coming back to, and the one that made the table look like an occasion.
Things to scoop. For guests who wanted to sit down with a proper plate, oven-roasted salmon with a delicate dill and lemon sauce, and tender coronation chicken in a fragrant dressing. Alongside them, herbed rice finished with olive oil, fresh herbs and lemon juice, and a roasted butternut squash and feta salad with walnuts, onion and peppery rocket.
That mix is what keeps a spread going for hours rather than emptying in twenty minutes. Guests come back, build something different the second time, and the table still looks generous at the end of the night.
Grazing catering built around the couple, not a set menu
Every menu is handmade from scratch and designed entirely around the occasion, and this one was shaped by three things the clients told us.
They wanted it to feel seasonal. Fresh and local ingredients are where we always start, and mid-September in Malta gives you figs, butternut squash, and herbs still at their best, which is exactly where two of the dishes came from. They wanted variety without fuss. Fish, chicken, and a substantial vegetable salad, so guests with different tastes each found something for them, and nobody needed an explanation of what they were eating.
And they wanted it to look like an occasion. A grazing table is as much about how it sits on the table as it is about how it tastes. Height, colour, abundance, a little gold. Guests should walk into the garden and see that something has been made for them.

Delivery included
Delivery was part of the booking, which mattered for a party of this kind. The couple were hosting in their own home on a Saturday evening. The last thing they needed was a collection to plan around.
Everything was prepared from scratch, delivered to the house, and set up ready to serve, arranged so the table looked complete the moment the first guests arrived. All they had to do was open the door. That is often the part clients remember most. Not that the food arrived, but that they never had to think about it.
Catering a double celebration
If your party is quietly marking two things at once, a birthday and a new home, a milestone and a move, grazing handles it well. It holds a crowd without dividing the evening into parts. Nobody has to choose which occasion the night is really about.
It also scales. Twenty guests in a garden and forty in a courtyard need different quantities, but the same relaxed shape works for both.
Your occasion, your menu
Every detail is yours, the dishes, the balance of handheld and plated, the way the table is styled, the delivery time that fits your evening rather than ours. Nothing on our menus is fixed, because no two celebrations are.
Available across Malta for private parties, garden gatherings, housewarmings and birthdays.
